Shepham Wind Farm

Disciplines involved:

EDP provided landscape and Environmental Impact Assessment co-ordination inputs for this wind farm application in East Sussex. Unusually for EDP’s energy projects, the proposed site was near an urban area, being located just beyond the Polegate Bypass, and adjacent to an area popular for new residential development. The key constraint, however, was the presence of the development to the South Downs National Park, and notably the eastern flank of this where the ridge provides extensive views across the site and the Pevensey Levels from the Southern Upland Way.

The proposed development was initially for 5 turbines, with this reduced to 3 following a refusal of the initial application and input from EDP into the redesign of the scheme to make it more acceptable from a landscape and visual perspective.

Despite a recommendation for approval from the Case Officer the revised scheme was also refused. However, on the basis of the Case Officer’s comments, the clients decided to appeal, and following a Public Inquiry, the appeal was upheld.

The turbines are now operational and are quite a sight in this lowland part of the Country.
