EDP provided a BS5837:2012 compliant arboricultural survey to support a detailed planning application on behalf of 3BM Education Partners. The planning consent, which was granted in July 2014, was for the erection of a two-storey building (plus basement and accommodation in the roof space) to provide additional classrooms and a sports hall facility for the school, and was subject to a range of conditions, three of which specifically related to arboriculture.
EDP provided further reporting in the form of an Arboricultural Method Statement, tree protection measures and Arboricultural Clerk of Works for the duration of the development in order to comply with the local planning authority’s specified conditions.
As a central urban site construction space was limited. EDP worked closely with both the approved contractor and local authority throughout the development phase to ensure the successful retention of the existing trees, whilst balancing the logistics/problems of the various phases of the build programme.
A number of techniques were implemented relating to tree rooting environments, such as non-intrusive excavation for service runs, tree root investigations prior to construction to confirm root morphology and installation of permeable sports/recreation surface, including drainage.
