The Lesney Matchbox factory site sits on the bank of the River Lee Navigation in Hackney, London. It is located on the opposite bank to Hackney Marshes, a short distance upstream of the 2012 Olympic site, and occupies a key gateway into Hackney from the east of the city. Telford Homes sought to redevelop the disused factory for a mixed-use development of commercial and residential units.
EDP were asked to provide Concept Landscape Design and Ecology services to the architects Stock Wolstencroft. Additionally, advice was given with regard to the use of Living Roof applications to provide both residential amenity and ecological enhancements. The final proposal incorporated two high level ‘Brown’ roofs using recycled demolition waste, several extensive sedum roofs and three intensive roof gardens for resident use. Furthermore, enhancements were proposed for the Canal channel itself with habitat planting to the bank and floating reed beds incorporated into the moorings to be provided by British Waterways.
