Landscape Planning and Design
EDP’s Landscape Team offers a comprehensive range of services, enabling us to provide ‘cradle to grave’ project support for our clients and their schemes. We are a Registered Practice of the Landscape Institute and the majority of our consultants are chartered members - having undergone rigorous training and testing to achieve that status. Between them they have decades of experience covering the whole breadth of this diverse sector. Our core services include the following:
Where formal assessment is not required, for example at early feasibility stages or where schemes are considered to be uncontroversial, EDP can provide ‘made to measure’ appraisals to suit almost any budget. These can be as simple as a rapid turn-around desk based assessment (utilising online data sources) or a field visit by a senior team member to provide up-front advice on the development potential of possible sites.
Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment
In the context of both outline and detailed planning applications, we offer full, formal landscape and visual impact assessments (LVIA) to inform the development of scheme proposals and support their submission. We will liaise with local authority landscape officers to agree appropriate and robust assessment methodologies and all our work is undertaken in line with current best practice guidance. Environmental Statement chapters can also be provided.
We have a proven track record in innovative and imaginative landscape design at all scales - from individual gardens to new school grounds. Our work encompasses all design inputs from overarching landscape strategies for large sites to detailed planting plans for residential schemes. NBS specifications, management plans and maintenance schedules can all be provided.
We have notable experience in respect of advising clients with regard to the use of, and indeed benefits of, biodiverse (or ‘green’) roofs. Our experience here includes a 3000m2 sedum roof for a new secondary school in Newbury and three small scale roofs for the 6* Bulgari Hotel in Knightsbridge. We can provide initial advice on system selection, design planting schemes and liaise with specialist contractors to arrange implementation.
Our experience of large scale ‘strategic’ development proposals (such as housing schemes of over 1000 units) and our activity in many regions of the country, results in us having a strong track record in the development of Green Infrastructure responses and strategies to support such proposals. Whether in the context of a strong existing regional/local Green Infrastructure framework document, or in the absence of such work, we are able to assess the existing GI network and assets, working with client teams to guide development proposals to work with these in a sensitive manner, ensuring an efficient and robust site response which maximises the multifunctional nature of its landscape resource.
Where we take schemes through to detailed design stages we can also provide on-site support to contractors, whether through a formal ‘Contract Administrator’ role or simply by being retained by our clients to review and advise on the work in progress.
Expert Witness Services
Unfortunately, despite our endeavours, planning committees do sometimes refuse applications – even when strong officer support is achieved. In these circumstances we are pleased that we have a number of experienced Expert Witnesses within the Landscape Team with some notable inquiry successes under their belts. We also are happy to assist in this manner where EDP has not provided the original landscape support for the refused application.
For more information on any of the services above, please call or email Charles Mylchreest on 01285 740427 or email@example.com who will be happy to discuss any prospective project with you.
