EDP were appointed by REG Windpower Ltd. to provide full EIA co-ordination and soft environmental discipline input to support their planning application for 3 large wind turbines near Kirkcudbright in Dumfries and Galloway. We acted on the site from the very early inception stage, advising on all aspects of the development from size of turbines to the proposed layout.
Following early design, the project was reduced from five to three turbines, with the size of the turbines reduced from 125m to 107m. This ensured the best ‘landscape fit’ for the proposal, and allowed us to be positive in presenting the proposal to the Local Planning Authority, conservation bodies and local people.
Despite favourable opinions from consultees, the scheme was refused at Planning Committee on landscape and heritage grounds. REG Windpower appealed the decision, with EDP tasked with presenting the landscape and heritage case. The appeal was unfortunately dismissed.
