EDP has been involved with the regeneration of some 52 hectares of previously developed land in the heart of Stourbridge since 2007. The site comprises the derelict remains of a formerly extensive 18th and 19th century ironworking complex straddling the meandering course of the River Stour and bounded in the east by the Stourbridge Branch Canal.

 

EDP has worked closely with the client (the Revelan Group), an extensive project team, Dudley MBC and English Heritage to successfully bring the site forward for redevelopment. Early phases of work focused on a rapid appraisal of the built environment to remove those buildings that were not designated or of hitherto unrecognised heritage interest. Having relatively quickly secured the approval of mixed residential proposals for the least constrained area, known as the Stourbridge Rolling Mills, attention rapidly turned to the jewel in the crown of the site, the Grade II* listed Rastrick and Foster’s ‘New Foundry’, which as a Category A Building at Risk not only warranted immediate remedial action, but also needed a sustainable long term use to be identified.

 

Planning permission and listed building consent, for the listed building’s restoration and conversion to the ‘Lion Medical Centre’, was secured in 2010, and this important facility has been operational since 2014.

 

Having assisted in the discharge of a number of conditions, including the preparation of a Conservation Management Plan for the surviving remains of the former Bradleys Ironworks, more recent involvements have focused on the northern end of the site, where the redevelopment of the Caparo steelworks has revealed archaeological remains of Wollaston Mill, a well preserved, multi-phased mill complex that required excavation prior to the construction of new residential dwellings by Taylor Wimpey.

 

The redevelopment of the site continues to move forward, with the next phase expected to concentrate on the creation of the Public Open Space in tandem with the implementation of the Conservation Management Plan.
