Further to the launch of the ‘Building for Nature’ award announced last week, EDP is thrilled to confirm that the Chesterton Farm proposals have been awarded Candidate status against this new national green infrastructure benchmark.
The development constitutes a mixed-use development of up to 2,350 new homes, 9ha of employment land, plus cycle links, a new primary school and new areas of green infrastructure including landscaping, playing fields, allotments and orchards - an urban extension of the historical market town of Cirencester, the largest town in the Cotswold District. Representing Bathurst Development Limited, EDP have worked closely with Cotswold District Council and wider stakeholders to design a scheme which reflects and enhances the landscape character of this rural area to the west of the Town. The assessors have been able to conclude that:
‘The quality and layout of green infrastructure depicted within the outline planning application promises to deliver multifunctionality for the benefit of both people and wildlife. The scheme’s 100 acres of green infrastructure includes formal and informal areas for recreation and play; areas for food production; and a network of attractive pedestrian routes and cycle paths running throughout the development, and linking the development to the town centre, to encourage active lifestyles. Connectivity between green infrastructure features within the boundary of the development and the wider area serves to protect existing habitat provision and create new linkages, improving the viability of priority species such as great crested newts.
The decision to award Chesterton Farm with the benchmark highlights the successes of the scheme to positively contribute to local planning policy which sets a vision for creating new healthy, liveable and sustainable neighbourhoods which respect the existing landscape character which is valued by existing communities.’
